Water meter repaired after six days of water wastage

LONEHILL – "In this country, water is like gold and it is so sad watching it flow down the road like that," says resident.

A Lonehill resident’s anguish in requesting her water meter to be repaired for almost a week has finally come to an end.

Vicki Griffin’s water meter had gushed water for almost a week and to contain the spray of water she had put bricks on top of the meter to try and lessen the flow.
“We are in an area where the water pressure is particularly bad in the mornings, so the bricks have helped decrease the pressure. With the pressure going down in the mornings, it has helped a little bit.

“Over the weekend it was horrendous. On one day, the water must have shot up about 15m in the air which is awful. In this country, water is like gold and it is so sad watching it flow down the road like that,” she said.
Griffin said she had reported the matter to Johannesburg Water a number of times and had not received a response from them until now.

The spokesperson for Joburg Water Puleng Mopeli said the delays had been caused due to material shortages, however, this had since been resolved.

“Bursts varies from infrastructure failures to air pressures in the line which causes a lock, therefore, resulting in a burst. Another challenge that we as the entity is facing is infrastructure damage and/or vandalism,” she said.
