MMC of Transport in the City of Johannesburg Funzi Ngobeni said the agreement will pave the way for the formation of a new bus operating company that will oversee day-to-day operations of the signed 141 low-entry buses of the Rea Vaya Phase 1C route.

He said according to the agreement, members of ATA and Armsta will be compensated for the removal of their mini-bus taxis that were operating on the route.

“The City is transforming the taxi industry through Section 41 of the National Land Transport Act of 2009 which promotes economic empowerment while transforming the industry. The agreement allows the City to remove 940 mini-buses from the route, depending on their age and condition,” Ngobeni said.

ATA chairperson Vusi Mayaba said they were satisfied with the terms and conditions of the agreement. “We started talks with the City over this project in 2014.
“We are very happy that today we are signing this agreement. It has been a long and bumpy journey to get to this point.”

The City’s Department of Transport executive, Dorothy Mabuza, “We are hoping that by the end of 2021/2022 financial year in June, we will have buses operating on this route if all goes according to the plan.”
