Silver Stars bags bronze at Bryanston High School hockey tournament

BRYANSTON – Diepsloot-based hockey club, Silver Stars participate in their first Bryanston High School Blue Flame Hockey Festival and take home bronze.

The saying ‘dynamite comes in small packages’ has been tested and proven by a Diepsloot hockey team.

Silver Stars Hockey Club, led by coach Silver Malele, competed in the Bryanston High School Blue Flame Hockey Festival and left an incredible mark.

Malele, coach of Silver Stars since 2006, has always loved and appreciated the sport since he playing centre-forward in school.

“The love for hockey came from school. I was living in a community which only focused on soccer and netball. I thought to myself that some children might want something completely out of the blue and different. So I brought hockey to my community and saw that children did in fact love it,” said Malele.

Recently, the team competed in the prestige hockey tournament hosted by Bryanston High School. While the fan-favourites were Linden and Bryanston high schools, Silver Stars were not at all intimidated during their run in the Blue Flame Hockey Festival.

The captain, Kgotso Ramodisa, who plays right-back, shared a few of his expectations just moments before playing his first match.

“The sport really helped me and my teammates on getting our heads straight and think about the future. I appreciate what my coach has done for me and the team. We expect to win at least three out of the four matches that we will play in the tournament,” said Ramodisa.”My words of confidence to my teammates were even if we lose all our games, we should not lose hope. We win as one and lose as one.”

With the five teams that played in the U16 division, Silver Stars were able to scoop up third place. Despite not reaching the target of three wins, the captain was excited to win two of his matches in their first Blue Flame Hockey Festival appearance.
