Huskies go on a walk with community members

CHARTWELL – Rescued huskies at Husky Rescue South Africa were treated to walk by volunteers and locals in the area in the sunset.

Volunteers were offered the opportunity to exercise the huskies of a local rescue NPO for Valentine’s Day on February 12.

Husky Rescue South Africa had hosted a number fundraising events last year within Covid regulations. Gilli Read, who is in charge of the fundraising at the rescue centre, said the turnout for the afternoon was positive, especially with this being the first walk they were able to have since the pandemic started.

“I think everything has been fantastic. We haven’t had a walk for about two years which has been a nightmare, but it was great to have this event,” she said.

“The turnout was great. We actually had way too many people for dogs, but it didn’t matter because they just ended up walking with us. I am hoping we can do this again soon.”
The walk was not all that was on offer, as one husky got to go on a ‘date’ with a community member who bid the highest on the centre’s Facebook post.

The date took place before the walk, with three-legged rescued husky, Roxy enjoying some time with a plate of steak.
“The date went very well I think. It is a pity that the winner is not able to adopt her since his property is not big enough, but it went well nonetheless.”

She thanked founder of the rescue centre Joanne van Niekerk and senior kennel staff member Dan Maluleke for their tireless assistance, as well as Col’Cacchio Dainfern for the catering after the walk.
“On Saturday they [Van Niekerk and Maluleke] started at 06:00 with feeding and potential adoptions, health checks and all, and were helping clear up at 20:00. They were also first up on Sunday finishing the clean-up from the day before.”
