Community football tournament a success

DIEPSLOOT – A local organisation hosted young football players from The Parks, Riverside View and Diepsloot to take part in a mini football tournament with the intent of bringing in social cohesion.

A Diepsloot-based organisation hosted their inaugural football tournament thanks to the aid of a few sponsors in the community on January 29.

Riverside Sustainable Solutions is the brainchild of The Parks resident Sibusiso Kekana and was established in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Six teams comprising nine to 15-year-olds from wards 94, 95, and 96 participated.

“The aim is to form social cohesion within the different communities. We want to have more children in structured sports. Right now, we only have football available but it is a start in getting more sports included,” he said.
A sponsor provided water and snacks but Kekana said he was hopeful more businesses and sponsors would join forces with his organisation for future tournaments.

“We have a lot of older people in the community, and they don’t get to be too involved in the community. We want to have people in the community get more involved and more active which is why we want to introduce more sports.”

Soccer will not be the only sport on offer for children in the community, and Kekana said netball would be available seen a number of residents have shown interest in it.
Looking to the future of sports tournaments organised by Kekana, his aim is to hold an Easter tournament.
“We would like for people to donate their time when it comes to these tournaments. Anyone who is willing to donate uniform kits for the players, referees, organisers, sponsors, equipment”
