Rector receives emotional farewell service

PAULSHOF – An emotional service was held at St Peter’s Prep School during a farewell ceremony for one of their rectors, Greg Royce’s retirement.


St Peter’s Prep School bid farewell to its rector who had served the school in various positions for a number of years.

Greg Royce’s service on 21 October was led by the Right Reverend Dr Steve Moreo, the Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg assisted by the Canon of Schools and three arch-deacons.

Royce had served for 26 years at the school, first as Boys’ School headmaster and then as rector of the Boys’ and Girls’ Prep Schools and Pre-prep.

The service was accompanied by magnificent music from the schools’ choirs and music department, including pieces composed especially for the occasion.

The school recently celebrated its 70th anniversary. Established by a former headmaster of St John’s, it opened in 1950 with 10 boys, two girls (and a cow). Today, almost 280 staff serve its learners.

The school has become known for:

• Its personalised learning approach, including its flexible learning programme now adopted by many schools

• Its cognitive program develops advanced thinking and much- improved judgment

• A teacher intern programme, hosting 25 previously disadvantaged students in conjunction with the University of Johannesburg which has developed a new distance degree based on the St Peter’s model.

• Coding and robotics curriculum.
