Blankets keep children warm

DIEPSLOOT – Thanks to the joint forces of the organisations, over 300 Diepsloot children received warm wool blankets and beanies.

Diepsloot-based NPO Diepsloot Care Foundation received a donation of blankets from Knit-a-Square organisation for children in the community.

The foundation’s founder, Sydney Morabe, worked with the organisation to distribute more than 300 blankets, beanies and soft toys on October 23.
Volunteer at the organisation, Amanda Kight, said she was introduced to Morabe by a neighbour and had been working with his foundation for the past 12 months in which three distributions have taken place.

Founded in 2005, and conceptualised by Rhonda Lowrie, Knit-a-Square has help worldwide as knitters around the world send their squares to South Africa, and a team of volunteers sew them together to be distributed to children in need.

Both Morabe and Kight thought the day’s handover was a success.
“Of course we think Saturday was successful, we reached 302 children who seemed delighted with their blankets and toys,” explained Kight.
“I am not sure when our next distribution will be in Diepsloot. We rely on people like [Morabe] to identify the recipients and to donate accordingly.”

Kight concluded, “[Morabe] is a wonderful example of someone who doesn’t have much himself, yet he dedicates his spare time to helping others.”
