Local NPO gets ready for upcoming cycling race

FOURWAYS – A local NPO is looking for fundraising from the community for an upcoming Joburg race.

A Fourways NPO is ready to ride in the upcoming Joburg race, set to take place on November 21.

Starfish Greathearts Foundation has been riding in the Ride 947 Joburg race since 2016, and has 32 cyclists taking part for the organisation in this year’s stint.
The foundation was founded 20 years ago and supports orphaned or vulnerable children in the country by working in partnership with community-based organisations.

Programmes the organisation offers include:

  • A wellness programme aimed at ensuring the physical, mental and social well-being of children to maximise their learning potential.
  • A capacity development programme to help strengthen the institutional capacity of community-based organisations through a combination of training, mentoring and on-site coaching services.

Events manager of the NPO, Mpiliso Skosana said they are hopeful to raise money for their cause during the race and from the community. “We need people to fundraise on behalf of Starfish. That is what we are pledging to the community. Right now, we are pledging each fundraiser to raise R1 300 for us. They can collect sponsorship by asking friends, family members and colleagues to donate for our cause,” she said.

One of the riders for Starfish, Daniel du Plessis, said he will be riding for the NPO for the first time, albeit not riding for a cause for the first time. “It is so important for me to be involved in helping kids thrive and be given the best chance in life, to be loved, cherished and protected. I have completed three-cycle challenges so far, each with a different NPO and this year I am excited to be riding for the Starfish Greathearts Foundation as they are doing an incredible job in uplifting young minds in our beautiful nation. The future is bright,” he said.
