Drivers warned about hijacking

FOURWAYS – Motorists were given tips to avoid various crimes.

Douglasdale police and the Community Policing Forum Sector 4 participated in a crime awareness campaign alongside a number of security companies on October 12.

The campaign was held on the corner of Leslie Avenue and William Nicol Drive and motorists received pamphlets that offered tips on how to reduce threats of armed robberies, hijackings, theft out of motor vehicles and smash-and-grabs.

These tips included:

• Keep valuables out of sight and laptops/handbags secured in the boot while in transit

• Light adjustments to driving styles are advised, such as keeping sufficient manoeuvring space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale CPF Sector 4 Manoj Bhoola said William Nicol Drive has been a hotspot for smash-and-grabs, especially when there is traffic congestion as reported by community members.

“If you are a victim on that road in traffic, you are really a sitting duck. The campaigns have been well received in which motorists have been made aware of simple things to avoid smash-and-grabs from happening to them.

“These are simple things we often take for granted when driving. We need to implement the same safety methods we do when driving like we do when at home in not making valuables visible.”

The forum’s public relations officer, Frieda Boils, thanked the police, led by Captain Kid Lepheana, for their efforts in combating crime in the sector.

Police advised community members to report any suspicious or criminal activity they may witness by calling 10111 or visiting their nearest police station as soon as possible.
