Police arrest six people for allegedly illegally cutting trees along William Nicol in Fourways

FOURWAYS – Moodley said a senior horticulturist of the entity, Joseph Ndou was conducting his morning site visits along William Nicol when he encountered employees from a landscaping company, illegally pruning trees.

The MMC for Community Development, Margaret Arnolds has expressed her disappointment with a landscaping company and a local shopping centre for displaying what she described as total disregard for the City’s processes and by-laws.

This was after six people were arrested and detained at Douglasdale Police Station on September 22 along William Nicol Drive in Fourways.

Spokesperson for Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo Jenny Moodley said a senior horticulturist of the entity, Joseph Ndou, was conducting his morning site visits along William Nicol Drive in Fourways when he encountered employees from a landscaping company, illegally pruning trees.

“Six acacias, estimated to be between 20 to 30 years old, to a value of R600, were severely pruned. Employees of the company claim they were acting on instruction from their superiors, who were commissioned by the adjacent shopping centre to increase the visibility of advertising signage, along this busy route,” she said.

“Officers from the Douglasdale Police Station and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) swiftly responded to Ndou’s call for assistance and the transgressing employees with their supervisors were subsequently arrested and detained at the Douglasdale Police Station.”
