The MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg, Mally Mokoena, and emergency services acting chief, Rapulane Monageng, visited Lonehill on September 16 to conduct an inspection of fire hydrants in the area.
Mokoena said it was critical for the City to ensure that fire hydrants are always in good working condition for speedy reaction to fire incidents.

“Working with Johannesburg Water, we will continue to ensure that all hydrants in this area and all areas across the City of Johannesburg are fixed and maintained for ease of operation for the EMS [emergency management services] in emergencies,” she said.
“From August to date, the EMS has inspected all the 78 hydrants that are available in the area and has found 26 of them faulty. These will be attended to in order to ensure that all the hydrants are working optimally.”

Mokoena said among the issues that have been identified during recent inspections was that many hydrants are obstructed, often by residents who are not aware that there are hydrants installed on municipal property outside their yards.
“We have also found that some of them are not clearly marked and some residents are unaware of them. We implore residents to avoid obstructing the use of hydrants or damaging them, especially those that are on municipal property outside their homes,” said Mokoena.
