Diepsloot residents block N14 Highway with burning tyres demanding electricity

DIEPSLOOT – Protesters were dispersed by the police and the highway was reopened.

The South African Police Service said no damage to property incidents were reported after a group of Diepsloot community members barricaded both directions of the N14 highway with objects and burning tyres on September 22.

Diepsloot Police Station spokesperson Tinyiko Mathebula said the protesters were dispersed by the police and the highway was reopened. “Gauteng Traffic Police came across approximately 10 community members barricading the N14 freeway in both directions with burning objects. As soon as the officers stopped, the protesters ran away. The officers cleared the road and traffic is free-flowing in both directions. No damages to any vehicles were reported,” said Mathebula.

Ward 95 councillor, Kate Mphahlele, said the protesting community members were complaining about power cuts. “A group of people from Ext 4 and 8 burned tyres on the N14 freeway demanding electricity. Police managed to disperse them,” she said.

Mphahlele said she will organise a meeting with the affected community members to find a solution. “The issue of electricity has been ongoing for some time in those particular areas. I am going to have a meeting with community members to find solutions,” Mphahlele concluded.
