Covid-19: More than 6 million vaccinations administered across SA; recovery rate at 90.1%

A total of 6 085 109 vaccinations had been administered on July 22.

The country has ramped up its vaccination programme this week, with the Department of Health reporting the administration of more than 990 000 vaccinations over the past five days.

On July 22, a total of 6 085 108 vaccinations had been administered.

On July 20, the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola and acting Minister of Health Mmamoloko Kubayi launched the correctional services vaccination roll-out programme in Johannesburg.

While the vaccination of the majority of correctional services officials began on July 15, the vaccination of inmates began on July 20 at 90 approved vaccination sites across the country.

New Covid-19 case numbers have fluctuated this week with only 7 209 new cases reported on July 19 and 16 240 new cases reported on July 21. The average daily new case numbers over the five-day period sits at 11 690.

The number of active Covid-19 cases in the country has seen a small reduction, with 178 072 active cases reported on July 18 and 163 885 active cases reported on July 22.

Gauteng remains the province with the highest number of active cases, sitting at 48 671 on July 22 – a reduction from 59 129 active cases reported on July 18.

The Western Cape follows Gauteng with the second-highest number of active cases. On July 22, there were 32 346 active cases in the province while at the start of the week the Western Cape reported 31 997 active cases.

KwaZulu-Natal is the province with the third-highest active case numbers, sitting at 18 061 on July 22 and beginning the week with 19 731.

The recovery rate has also seen an increase to 90.1% on July 22.

Deaths, however, remain high with an average daily death rate of 390 deaths over the five-day period.
