CS Leeuwkop proud of bowls team

LEEUWKOP – The CS Leeuwkop team has won the JBA Midweek League.

A bowls team from Correctional Services Leeuwkop has won the Johannesburg Bowls Association league title following a tough competition.

The DCS team comprised of Phillip Barnard, Eric Thompson, Louwrens Pieterse, André Beer and Jaco de Nysschen (who was injured for the last game). The team began the league competition on 28 October last year, comprising of numerous play-offs before the title was given.

Barnard said, “It felt great to win. It’s the first time that our team won the Midweek League. In the first year, we had fallen out in the second round and last year we were also going well but then it was called off because of Covid.”

The final saw the excited team find victory at the Bedfordview Bowling Club on 21 April. “I think we just kept our heads in the game and, most importantly, we enjoyed the game. The games were very tough. Some of them we only won on the last end,” said Barnard.

He said that bowls is a great game where players have the opportunity to meet many new people and compete against provincial and Springbok players. “It would be great to get younger people involved in the game to keep it going,” concluded Barnard.

Acting area commissioner at Leeuwkop Thomas Mokhemi Molefe said he is proud of the team’s performance. “Once more they gave an outstanding performance. We know the importance of being active and involved in the different sporting codes and the contribution it makes to one’s overall well-being, especially during these difficult times of Covid.”

Molefe concluded. “May they continue to flourish as they will be tackling the next challenge in this sporting field. Congratulations to all those who participated in bringing the title home.”
