Rotary Morningside spearheads Easter food drive

The Rotary Club of Morningside recently stepped up its efforts, providing much-needed food relief to the neighbouring disadvantaged community of Diepsloot.
The Pick n Pay n Drop campaign, which ran from 29 March to 11 April at Morningside Shopping Centre, was in response to the rising unemployment rates, Covid-19 challenges and rising food prices which exacerbated food security In the area.
The club collected donations of non-perishable goods such as samp, beans, pap and tins of food as well as pre-packaged boxes of food which Pick n Pay shoppers were able to purchase for R99 and drop off in the collection box as they exit the store.
According to Rotarian and coordinator of the Pick n Pay n Drop project Jack Chen, over 9 million South Africans are going hungry every day – that is an estimated 16 per cent of the population.
“We have discovered that the situation is dire in communities such as Diepsloot where unemployment has skyrocketed due to Covid-19 and previously employed individuals are now resorting to roaming the streets looking for hand-outs for themselves and their families,” said Chen.
The club’s involvement in the Diepsloot community began last year when the Early Care Foundation, which oversees a number of early childhood development (ECD) centres in the community, reached out to the club for support.
