Man arrested by Douglasdale Police for rape, appears in court

DOUGLASDALE – A 32-year-old man arrested for rape is appearing in the Randburg Magistrates' Court.

Police are investigating a case of rape after a 32-year-old suspect was arrested recently.

The male suspect has since appeared in court. Douglasdale Police Station spokesperson Captain Mpho Tshetlhane said it was alleged the suspect met the victim, a woman aged 34, at a complex in Olivedale and told her his employer was looking for a domestic worker.

The suspect asked the victim to accompany him to his employer, telling her the easiest route was via a shortcut through the bush.

“While walking through the bush, the suspect then overpowered the victim and raped her,” Tshetlhane added.

“The victim then managed to escape and report the incident. The suspect was arrested.

“He appeared in Randburg Magistrates’ Court and the case was remanded. Police investigations are continuing.”

Tshetlhane said police were urging community members who might have been victims of similar crimes to report these to their nearest police station.

The police advised job seekers, especially women, to consider the following safety tips:

• Open spaces are very dangerous to walk alone and should be avoided

• Do not be lured to secluded areas with a promise or being offered a job

• Avoid walking or jogging alone in the street

• Do not accept gifts from strangers

• Do not walk alone in the dark

• Report any suspicious characters to the police.

“We also appeal to community members to report all criminal activities happening in their area by phoning 011 699 1333/20 or 071 675 7358 or 086 001 0111 or alternatively use the MySAPS app to provide tip-offs anonymously.”
