Police nab three alleged copper thieves

Midrand police officers arrested three suspects at a scrap metal business, who were allegedly in possession of stolen copper valued at R80 000 recently.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Constable Elliott Mabulane said police in the Glen Austin area allegedly found men in possession of copper cables in a scrap metal yard, which they were apparently going to sell for cash.

“Police received a tip-off from an informant concerning the days and times when the suspects sell copper. Police then proceeded to the said address where the arrest took place,” said Mabulane.

The suspects were due to appear in court on charges of possession of stolen copper.

Mabulane said the men also tried to bribe police with R600, for which they will also be charged in court.

“Midrand police and our station commander are totally against corruption and call on the community to report any form of it.”

“The police have done a great job proving to the community that there are still good cops with integrity, sacrificing their lives for the safety of the community.”

Midrand Station Commander Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso was proud of having police with such honesty, trust and values.

“A case docket has been opened and further investigation is taking place. The suspects are currently detained at Midrand police cells and are awaiting their first appearance in court.”
