Gauteng EMS members in recovery following attack by patient

VORNA VALLEY – “We are investigating a case of common assault, no arrests have been made yet," said Gauteng Police spokesperson Kay Makubela.

Two Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) members are in recovery after they were allegedly attacked by a patient they were assisting on 3 March.

During the incident which took place at the Swiss Club in Vorna Valley, the two EMS members, a man and a woman, were attending to an assault incident at the venue.

Gauteng Health MEC spokesperson, Kwara Kekana said upon their arrival at the scene, the two paramedics found one male patient lying on the ground with stab wounds and immediately initiated treatment and care. While the paramedics were busy treating the patient, he allegedly became aggressive and kicked the female health worker in the face and kicked the male ambulance attendant on the back of the head.

“The female sustained a contusion and swelling on her right eye and was taken to a hospital where the doctor booked her off sick due to the injuries she sustained,” Kekana added.

As for the male medic, Kekana added, “He had rhinorrhea and complained of dizziness. He will consult a doctor should he not feel better.”

Kekana said the patient who the paramedics were attending to was taken to hospital in a private ambulance that was called as the Gauteng EMS paramedics could not continue treatment due to their injuries sustained.

“The matter was escalated to the Midrand Police Station Commander, Visible Policing Commander and the Provincial Operations Command Centre.”

Spokesperson for the Gauteng police, Captain Kay Makhubela confirmed the case, saying that it was still under investigation. “We are investigating a case of common assault, no arrests have been made yet,” he said.

Secretary for the Swiss Club, Max Waspe said the management committee of the club was briefed on the matter on 6 April.

Waspe added that the incident took place at a privately owned restaurant located within the club.

He said due to the matter being a criminal and legal case in which the club as the landlord was not involved, and due to the criminal and legal investigation processes that were currently taking place, they have been advised to refrain from commenting.
