High school learners at Curro Rivonia spent two days making cards and 1 000 sandwiches for Rise Against Hunger.
The non-profit organisation is a global movement aimed at ending hunger and empowering communities, nourishing lives and responding to emergencies.
Head of high school academics at Curro Rivonia, Francois Vermaak said they chose to support Rise Against Hunger because they were looking for an organisation that was involved with children. “The roughly
1 000 sandwiches, packed individually and accompanied by an apple, will help feed a child who might not otherwise have a meal today.”
He said the learners decided to make a meal that was nutritionally sustainable.
“A peanut butter and jam sandwich on brown bread lasts longer than white bread for example. The apple adds much-needed vitamins. The card to accompany it was just an added touch from the heart of our students to them.”
Vermaak said the purpose of the exercise was to take time to reflect, do good for others and help somebody in need. Each learner also wrote a letter to the elderly in old age homes, pouring genuine love into their words.
“Many facilities for the elderly have remained in some form of lockdown, isolating them and making them feel lonely. We hope these letters will brighten up their day and remind them that they are indeed loved.”
