Trust sets itself a target of 100 000 bags before end of 2021

GLENFERNESS – Sean Williams said their target was to collect more than 100 000 bags of litter before the end of 2021 and create more job opportunities for unemployed people.

In an effort to keep local neighbourhoods clean and preserve the environment while creating job opportunities for the unemployed, the Sean Williams Living Creatures Trust recently embarked on a cleaning campaign in Glenferness.

Scores of local community members, young and old, joined forces with the organisation on 27 March and collected 167 bags of litter in the Jukskei River. Sean Williams, the founder of the organisation, said their target was to collect more than 100 000 bags of litter before the end of 2021 and create more job opportunities for unemployed people.

“We are very grateful for the support we’ve received from different communities. Our mission through this initiative is to keep the planet clean and preserve nature for the next generations.

“This initiative has also created more than 20 job opportunities for unemployed people from Diepsloot who lost their jobs as a result of Covid-19 lockdown. They collect litter and keep neighbourhoods clean in different communities of Johannesburg North from Monday to Friday,” he said. Williams added that the organisation also visits different local schools to raise awareness and teach learners about the dangers of littering to the environment.

“We need to teach young people in our country about the effects of littering and invite them to be actively involved in preserving nature and water species. We have also placed a number of garbage bins in a number of northern suburbs to encourage the culture of recycling litter.”

Ward 94 councillor, David Foley who was also part of the cleaning campaign praised the organisation and residents for being part of the solution. “I have made a proposal to the City Council to have nets installed in different parts of Jukskei River in order to prevent this litter from getting into Hartbeespoort Dam where the river’s destination ends,” Foley concluded.
