Covid-19 is no match for continued matric mathematics success in Diepsloot

DIEPSLOOT– Bowie said if learners were to have any chance of success in matric maths they needed to get on top of their foundational skills and fundamentals in grades 7, 8 and 9.

A non-profit organisation that provides after-school mathematics support to learners from impoverished communities celebrated a 100 per cent matric pass rate for the fourth consecutive year.

Mathematics coordinator at Olico Maths, Lynn Bowie said, “Our Diepsloot matric Class of 2020 achieved a 100 per cent pass rate for pure mathematics with three-quarters of Olico’s matric learners scoring in the top 20 per cent of maths performers nationally.

“The results of our matriculants reinforces the importance of ensuring there is a good solid foundation in mathematics in the initial years of high school.” Bowie added that if learners were to have any chance of success in matric maths, they needed to get on top of their foundational skills and fundamentals in grades 7, 8 and 9.

“Despite the massive disruption of a global pandemic, our learners managed to achieve incredible results because of these foundations and the ongoing support of their teachers and our tutors. We’re especially pleased to have been able to supplement the work of the school teachers with the provision of skilled tutors and tailored use of purpose-built technology.” One of the learners who was part of the programme last year, Rendani Singo said after-school classes made a huge difference to her mathematics results.

“I joined the programme six years ago and it has been like a second home to me. Studying during lockdown was hard and challenging because it was something no one else has ever been through before. I am so excited that this year I will pursue my dream career in information sciences,” Rendani said.
