Afrika Tikkun on a mission to empower local young farmers

DIEPSLOOT– Afrika Tikkun has set itself a target to train at least 90 project beneficiaries every year.

In an effort to create sustainable job opportunities and empower young entrepreneurs, a local non-profit organisation has embarked on a small-scale agricultural project that will help develop social entrepreneurs in Diepsloot.

Afrika Tikkun focuses on empowering young South Africans from underprivileged communities. The marketing manager at the organisation, Precious Nala said the project would focus on Diepsloot and surrounding communities for now. “In Diepsloot, we’ve secured a plot of land close to our Wings of Life Centre where we’ve successfully farmed chickens, goats, lambs and bees,” she said.

“The learnings, experience and fruits of labour from this project will soon be shared and duplicated at all our centres.

“The farm is focused on developing social entrepreneurs through a scalable, small-scale agricultural project.” Nala added that the organisation had set itself a target to train at least 90 project beneficiaries every year. “As part of the project, every [beneficiary] shall receive training from qualified agriculture graduates.

“The [beneficiaries] shall be trained per annum with each [beneficiary] getting the support to start their own business upon graduation.”
