The Department of Basic Education released the results of the National Senior Certificate on 23 February and former Fourways High School learners were excited to fetch their results
Results were sent to the school by the department earlier that morning, and it was announced that the school has a pass rate of just over 97 per cent.
Newly appointed principal of the school and current head of academics, Andrew Holliday said he is proud of the Class of 2020 for their results, but still feels that there is room for improvement.
“There is a slight drop, which we were expecting because of Covid. Sometimes learners do fail and it is either because of subject choices or because there are things that go horribly wrong. We are always looking to improve,” he said.
“There were some learners who coped, but all the teachers preferred to have classes in person as well as some learners now. Our current class of Grade 12 learners are incredibly grateful to be back full time.”
Former head girl of the school, Suzette Klingenberg was named as one of the school’s top achievers as she obtained five distinctions in English, Afrikaans, life orientation, history and business studies. She felt there was a lot of support for learners by the staff to help with their work. “We didn’t expect the transition of going online from face-to-face teaching, but the school has put in a lot of work to still have us feeling that we are still moving forward in our academics.
“Once we adapted to the transition, we made it through, but it was tough in the beginning.”
Klingenberg was involved in the school’s tennis and public speaking while juggling her head prefect duties. She remembered feeling surprised when she saw her marks. “Seeing the hype on social media nearly made me check at the time as well. But I [decided] to get a good night’s rest and check in the morning.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding, especially through this year and to know that anything is possible. Knowing that there us a light at the end of the tunnel even though challenging situations that we can adapt and do well.”
