KAVISHA GOPAL: The vaccine brings about hope and I will take it when it becomes available. I believe that the virus will continue to mutate and we will have to rapidly adapt the vaccines , like we do with the flu shot.

The first batch of the AstraZeneca vaccines produced by the Serum Institute in India arrived in South Africa at OR Tambo International Airport on 1 February.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced during a nation address that frontline healthcare workers would be the first to be injected with the vaccine. The Fourways Review took to the streets of the masked community to find out if they would they take the vaccine if they had the opportunity.

MELISSA VAN WYK: What is the data and side effects behind it? There are so many things we don’t know. I am not sure if I will take it.

NOCWAKA PAKAMILE: I don’t trust it. Why has it arrived so late? If available to the public, I would not take it. I have also told my kids not to take it.

PANDORA MABAI: I’m very sceptical because we don’t know what it consists of. I’d like it to be used by our country’s leadership to show we are being led. I would then take it.

RACHAEL NAROTHUM: I have not thought about it because I’m still taking all the necessary precautions to keep safe. I still feel like I’m safe but I’m unsure if I would take it.

JAMES CLEVELY: The vaccine is here to help us so I think we should take it given the chance. I would definitely take it and have my staff take it. I will even pay for it.
