Local residents concerned with the state of roads in Craigavon

FOURWAYS– Councillor Mafokwane said the JRA, under the Department of Transport, was doing all it can to have all notorious potholes fixed across Johannesburg.

Ward 115 councillor, Matome Mafokwane has encouraged residents to continue reporting issues of potholes in their respective areas to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) so they can be repaired.

This was after Craigavon resident and community activist, Natalia Vasilopoulos raised concerns about the state of roads in the area. Vasilopoulos said driving on Elm and Oak avenues in Craigavon was a nightmare because of potholes. “We’ve been reporting these potholes to the local councillor since last year and nothing was done except empty promises,” she claimed.

“The recent rain has made things worse. We are now forced to use one side of the road to avoid deep potholes… Every time it rains, the number of potholes grow and we find ourselves in trouble when driving on Elm Avenue which is the only entrance to our homes. Our local roads in Craigavon are in the state of disrepair.”

Mafokwane said JRA was doing all it could to repair all dangerous potholes in the city, “It is true that the majority of the roads across the city are in dire need of maintenance work. JRA and the Department [of Transport] are experiencing various challenges that are hampering delivery of its core mandate of road maintenance.”

Mafokwane added, “All indications are that more efforts are underway to resolve the matter. I would like to urge residents to bear with us. JRA is working around the clock to find a lasting solution to this situation.”

JRA spokesperson Mosa Makhalima said, “We urge residents to report portholes and all storm water infrastructure defects to JRA via Twitter, Facebook, customer contact centre 0860 562 874 and email hotline@jra.org.za.”
