Artist aims to inspire others to follow passions

DAINFERN – Relaxing music and creative art pieces of well-known people on exhibition brought a modest crowd on a Sunday afternoon.

A Fourways resident hosted an art exhibition showcasing his year’s work to the community at the 011 restaurant in Dainfern on 29 November.

A modest turnout came to view the various drawings done by Duke Farouk Abdie, while a band played jazz and R&B classics.

Abdie, who had been in the construction and building industry for most of his life, had to leave this field of work due to a back injury.

It was then that he turned fully to his artwork and creations.

With the exhibition, Abdie said he was showcasing his artwork to inspire and welcome aspiring artists, aside from monetary gain and selling his pieces.

“The manager of the 011 restaurant made me consider exhibiting my pieces since I go there often.

“We are given knowledge, and it is our duty to share it. To help people do better.

“My intention is for people to be aware that there is someone available to help. I want to give something back to people since I am getting old.

” It will give me great satisfaction to know I was able to help an artist develop their work.”

Various creations of his are drawings of the late Nelson Mandela and musicians.

“The drawings can make nice gifts for family and friends during the festive season.”

Dainfern resident Tshepiso Monkhe said he particularly enjoyed the music and the atmosphere of the exhibition.

“It has been a really great day, the atmosphere is great.

“The artwork and music just brought a nice atmosphere here.

“It brought people together.”
