Dainfern dancer awarded gold in national contest

DAINFERN – Grade 4 learner Aneeqa Moore overcame nerves to achieve gold during a national dance competition in October.

A Grade 4 learner of Dainfern College impressed during a national dance competition where she recently won gold in her age group.

Ten-year-old Aneeqa Moore, who recently took to hip-hop dancing, performed a stellar solo routine during the 2020 instalment of the South African Schools Dance Championships held at Lewende Woord in Centurion. The competition ran from 26 to 31 October.

Leading up to her performance, Aneeqa recalled feeling ‘really nervous’ before her performance as she was in a group the last time she performed. “I’m normally never nervous for these competitions, but I did have fun. I was out of breath at the end, but I think the performance went really well,” she said.

“When the results were announced, I felt really proud of myself since I thought I would never do a solo performance.”

She had taken part in the championships last year in a group performance where they received a diamond ranking for their age group.

Aneeqa started her dancing career when she was in Grade 0 and did ballet.

The Grade 4 learner said managing her time has never been a concern with her many extra curricular activities which included hockey, club netball, swimming, drama, choir and singing.

“Since I was born, my mom always told me that when I come home, I need to get dressed, brush my hair and do my homework because then I can do anything else in the afternoon,” she said.

With dancing being her passion, alongside singing and acting, Aneeqa said she had big dreams to stay in the arts field.

“I want to keep dancing for the rest of my life. One day when I’m older, I’d like to [start] my own art school where there is singing, dancing, acting and art,” Aneeqa concluded.
