ICYMI: Lonehill Park library encourages love of books

LONEHILL– Marketing and communications manager at LRA, Shelley Miller said the initiative was aimed at promoting a culture of books reading and encourage community members to utilise local parks.

The late Roman scholar Marcus Cicero once said, “A room without books is like a body without a soul.”

In their quest to promote a culture of book reading, Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) embarked on an initiative to build mini-libraries in local parks in 2018.

With the help of American International School of Johannesburg, the residents association recently opened another library in Lonehill Park.

Marketing and communications manager for the LRA, Shelley Miller, said the initiative was aimed at promoting a culture of book reading and encourage community members to utilise local parks. “The first library was installed in the Lappies Park on Concourse Crescent in 2018 and the second one which is in the Lonehill Park was recently built, stocked and donated by the American International School of Johannesburg,” she said.

“The initiative promotes community living and spirit as well as the utilisation of the park areas in general. Our plan is to eventually have several of these libraries throughout the neighbourhood for the enjoyment of the residents, the next one will be erected in Beverley Park followed by the smaller parks in Lonehill.”

She added that some community members have volunteered their time to keep the library in good condition.

“Visitors can either enjoy the book reading whilst in the park or take it home and return it when they have finished reading it. We are extremely fortunate to have some community members who volunteer their time to sort the books and keep the cabinets neat and tidy.”

She concluded, “If residents have any books which they would like to donate to our libraries, they can drop them in the little library cabinets at Lonehill Park or Lappies Park.”
