Cycling legend gears up for a challenge
JOBURG– Nic White is the Team Vitality cycling ambassador for the Double Century race this year.
Fitness enthusiasts will know that cycling is a favourite pastime in South Africa.
This year Team Vitality is turning up the heat with legendary cyclist Nic White. Named the Team Vitality ambassador for the Double Century race this year, he has also joined forces with Vitality head of wellness, Dr Mosima Mabunda – together they want to get people moving in sync.
Cycling for over 30 years, White said that this race will give cyclists the opportunity to push themselves. The race will take place in Swellendam on 21 November.
“It’s been a bit of a slow year on the cycling front, from a competition perspective and an engagement perspective. With the restrictions easing a little bit, the race has come back onto the calendar and I’m excited.”
White said that with the state of the world right now, this allows people to re-engage and do some riding again together.
“The Double Century race is just on the fringe of everything opening up so they decided that it is possible to do the event now. What makes it special this year is that instead of riders racing for themselves it will be a team effort,” adding that it drives group goals which aligns with what Vitality is all about.
According to him, group exercise makes for better results and greater motivation to be active. “It gives you a reason to get on your bike in your lounge, bedroom or lapa. From a fitness perspective, the motivation to do something with your mates is much stronger. It’s quite great and a nice way for engagement to take place.”
Pushing the limits, White also said that the race is a big step for a lot of people.
“The races in SA are normally focused around one century – 100 kilometres, so two centuries is a pretty big step. It’s not commonly done but there is big motivation to tick a box that is bigger than the norm. It becomes quite fulfilling to achieve it, to look after your people or be helped by your peers, so that is another motivating factor.”
