Chartwell retired nurse gives back to the community

DOUGLASDALE – After permission was granted by the station management, Harty said she then bought some flowers from her own pocket.

A retired nurse from Chartwell who loves gardening and a clean environment has urged business people and individuals to lend a helping hand in her bid to revive Douglasdale Police Station’s flower garden.

Sue Harty, who used to work as a professional nurse at Olivedale Clinic for many years, said it pained her to see a flower garden at a public institution in a state of neglect.

“Every time I passed by the police station, I realised that the flower garden was turning into a weedy garden.

“The weed outside the station had grown to such an extent that you could not even see police station signage.

“I then decided to speak to the station management to offer a helping hand to revive this flower garden inside and outside the police station.”

After permission was granted by the station management, Harty did not waste time to get started. “I took some of the flowers from my garden at home and bought some to use in revitalising this beautiful garden.

“Because I couldn’t do this work alone, I hired Mkhululi Nyoni and Nkosikhona Moya to help me remove the weeds from the garden and prepare the soil for gardening.”

Harty appealed to business people or individuals to donate concrete benches and a table to be installed in the garden.

“We are appealing to business people or individuals to donate a concrete table and benches to put in the garden.

These benches will be used by the staff members at the station and members of the public as well.”
