Nineteen injured in Kyalami taxi accident

KYALAMI – Taxi overturns in Kyalami leaving around 19 people injured.

Around 19 people were injured when a taxi overturned on the corner of Allandale Road and R55 in Kyalami on 19 October.

Multimedia journalist at ER24, Ineke van Huyssteen said that when ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 7.30am, they found multiple patients. “The patients were assessed and found to have sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious. ER24, as well as various other medical services, treated the patients at the scene before transporting them to the hospital for further medical care.”

Midrand Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela, said the accident took place around 7.18am. An eye witness who was following the taxi reported that the driver was driving recklessly and not obeying road signs. “As the taxi driver approached the Allandale Road and R55 intersection, there was a vehicle right in the middle of the road and he drove into it. The taxi then fell on its side, fully loaded with passengers,” said Tlamela

“The accident also included four other vehicles. No fatalities were reported, but all passengers were taken to [hospital] to get medical attention as most of them got injured seriously.”

Tlamela said that the driver attempted to flee the scene but was arrested by police.  Hi will be charged for reckless and negligent driving, driving without a license and failing to stop at the scene of the accident.
