How Metro Police have been keeping the streets of Joburg safe

JOBURG – Suspects arrested for illegal possession of drugs, firearms and counterfeit goods.

Metro police have been hard at work ensuring the streets of the city are safe and sound for us all.

On 3 October, two suspects were arrested on charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. Metro police Freeway Unmarked Unit officers received information on suspects who were on foot firing shots randomly in the Johannesburg CBD. Officers proceeded to the location provided and the suspects were identified. Officers searched both suspects aged 26 and 34, and one unlicensed firearm and ammunition were found in their possession. The suspects were arrested and detained at Johannesburg Central police for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In Booysens, a father and son were arrested after being found in possession of a hijacked vehicle and mandrax. While patrolling on 5 October, Metro police K9 officers stopped a suspicious Audi A1 with two occupants. Officers checked the vehicle and discovered that the vehicle’s identification number had been tampered with. Upon further investigation, officers discovered that the vehicle was reported to have been hijacked last year in Midrand. Forty mandrax tablets were also found inside the vehicle. The two suspects were detained at Booysens Police Station and the vehicle was booked in at the Vehicle Identification and Safe Guard Unit in Aeroton.

In another bust, Metro police together with police and Brands SA, recovered and confiscated counterfeit goods on 1 October. Metro police received a tip-off that informed them of an address where counterfeit goods were allegedly being sold. Officers searched the store upon their arrival and found 18 packets of Rizzla, 71 cartons of Westleigh cigarettes, eight loose cigarette cartons, 22 cartons of Red and Black cigarettes and 50 tins of Kiwi shoe polish, all counterfeit.

Police also searched a supermarket not to far from the store and they found and confiscated another 20 cartons of Westleigh cigarettes and 10 packets of Rizzla.
Two undocumented foreign nationals who were working at the supermarket were also arrested during the search. All the confiscated counterfeit goods and foreign nationals were booked in at Kliptown Police Station.
