City of Johannesburg dishes out another instalment of title deeds in Riverside RDP housing project

RIVERSIDE– Samuel Nyoni described the event as landmark in his life and failed to hold tears of joy.

The MMC for Housing for the City of Joburg, Mlungisi Mabaso, has appealed to title deed holders of newly built RDP houses in Riverside not to sell their houses.

Mabaso was speaking to dozens of people during a handover ceremony of 50 title deeds to the rightful beneficiaries of houses in a newly built multi-storey housing development project in Riverside on 1 October.

Mabaso explained that his department was giving priority to people living with a disability and senior citizens.”This year alone, the department has approved more than 700 title deeds of this housing project with 4 000 multi-storey units. Everyone who was allocated a house in this project will receive their proof of ownership, however, we will be issuing them out in phases,” Mabaso said.

“I can assure all those who are still waiting, that we will come back again to issue the remaining ones.”

One of the beneficiaries who received his title deed was 92-year-old Samuel Nyoni who described the event as a landmark in his life and failed to hold back tears of joy.

“I applied for this house more than 20 years ago, I even lost hope that one day I will have a proper house in my name. This day marks a turning point in my life. I spent most of my life renting and I am happy that I will be able to leave behind something for my family,” Nyoni said.

Among those who attended the event was Ward 96 councillor Sbusiso Mthembu, who thanked the department for ensuring that elderly people received their houses while they were still alive.

“I am grateful that the housing department has kept its promise to come back as they promised last time they were here. I am certain that even those who haven’t yet received their ownership papers will in the next phase,” councillor Mthembu added.
