International showjumper, Kayla Gertenbach shares tips

FOURWAYS – "Showjumping is the same as any sport in that it requires dedication and hard work as well as talent,” explained Kayla Gertenbach.

There are many boxes one needs to tick if they want to be a great showjumper and even the best do not stay as good as they are without help.

International showjumper, Kayla Gertenbach has offered some tips for new showjumpers as well as those who want to take their sport to the next level.

“Showjumping is the same as any sport in that it requires dedication and hard work as well as talent,” explained Gertenbach, who owns Kayla Gertenbach Equestrian, which is based in Kyalami.

“But unlike other sports, it is not just the skills of the athlete that is put to the test, but the horse too. You need to have a feel for the horse and a good relationship with horses to get the best out of them.”

Whether new to the sport or already professional, Gertenbach said showjumpers need to have instructors or a support team who can spot mistakes they might miss and offer extra input.

“Even professionals need eyes on the ground to help them improve and this is especially true for people who are still learning. You also need to be brave so you can focus on technique during the jumps rather than worrying.”

Furthermore, a showjumper will need a good horse or team of horses to help them succeed. “A good rider will make the horse better and also a good horse will make the rider better. You need to know how to match them [rider and horse]. When you start out you will need to focus on getting the basics right and not overcomplicate things. The horse goes left, right, stop and go. You can focus on the advanced stuff later.”

Gertenbach recommended those new to the sport to find a good coach who will help them enjoy the sport because that is most important. “The best mindset is that the horse comes first. It is not just about winning. A happy horse will fight harder for you.”
