Support the work of the LRA Enviro Team

LONEHILL – In celebration of Arbor Month, City Parks have offered to donate trees and compost to any residents in Lonehill who are willing to plant these trees on their verges.

The Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) is celebrating Arbor Month by encouraging residents to plant trees and support the work of the Lonehill Environment Fund.

Marketing manager for the LRA Shelley Miller said that in celebration of Arbor Month, City Parks has offered to donate trees and compost to any residents in Lonehill who are willing to plant these trees on their verges.

“The idea is to replace the many trees that have reached the end of their life-span and those that have been severely impacted by Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB).

“City Parks will also deliver hundreds of trees for the LRA Environment Team to plant around Lonehill and in our parks. We plan to have all these planted by the end of September.”

Miller and the environmental manager at the LRA, Nadeem Abrahams, are delighted for the support and donations from City Parks.

In addition to their tree-planting efforts, the environmental team aims to upgrade and revamp the many flower beds in the parks and entrances into the greater Lonehill area.

The green team has also worked hard to clear and cut back foliage on the Lonehill Koppie, which reopened on 5 September after being closed since 1 April to allow animals in the reserve to hibernate.

Miller described the Koppie saying, “It is a rocky veld dotted with shrubs, small trees and knee-high grasses. Guinea fowl, an abundance of birdlife, critters and even porcupines roam the area, and it is now populated with hundreds of dassies. The Koppie itself is largely made up of large, very old boulders, with trees and indigenous shrubs now almost obscuring the rocks, except for the topmost boulders.”

Lonehill residents are encouraged to join the Lonehill EnviroFund, which funds the Lonehill Estate Maintenance team, including an environmental portfolio manager, eight gardeners and their equipment.

The team works to remove illegal signage, clean and empty public bins, servitudes, parks and green spaces. They also sweep the streets, pick up litter and are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Lonehill, Lappies, Crestwood and Beverley Parks, including the many smaller parks in Lonehill.

They also upkeep and maintenance of park playground equipment and other fixtures such as the dam fountain, fund erosion control and the improvement of local ecosystem integrity amongst a number of other tasks.

The LRA believes that the community is stronger together and that the achievements of the community are the result of the combined efforts of each resident.
