Local club takes care of its caddies

DAINFERN – Local golf club takes care of its caddies for 13 weeks while they do not work.

Most businesses have suffered financially during the lockdown, and Dainfern Golf and Residential Estate is no exception.

But the golf section ensured there were no retrenchments, all staff received salaries and the caddies were taken care of, even when some were not working. “The collection of goods for caddies was a partnership between the club and the members who donated to this,” explained golf director, Tim Steynberg.

“We are very grateful to the members who contributed and I would also like to thank Broadacres SuperSPAR who gave us good deals for our bulk items.” These collections were held for 13 weeks before golf was allowed back in lockdown Level 3. Golf RSA, PGA South Africa and Club Management Association of Southern Africa provided safety protocols that golf clubs needed to follow.

These included adjustments to the operations of caddies. At Dainfern, caddies no longer carry equipment for golf players. Instead, they accompany players and act as spotters for the players, watching the balls and finding them. The caddies also offer advice, rake the bunkers and repair pitch marks.
