Covid-19: 3 880 new cases and 195 deaths on 20 August

A cumulative total of 599 940 cases of Covid-19 had been recorded on 20 August.

Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize reported that a cumulative total of 599 940 cases of Covid-19 had been recorded on 20 August. A further 3 880 new cases were identified that day.

A further 195 people died as a result of the virus on 20 August, 83 of whom were from Gauteng, 36 from KwaZulu-Natal, 26 from the Eastern Cape, 25 from Free State, 13 from the Western Cape and 12 from Limpopo.

Gauteng province still leads with the highest number of cumulative Covid-19 cases countrywide (202 955) followed by KwaZulu-Natal (108 080), the Western Cape (103 616) and the Eastern Cape (84 586).

Recoveries now stand at 497 169, which translates to a recovery rate of 82 per cent.

A further 24 612 new tests were conducted on 20 August. The total number of tests conducted thus far sits at 3 480 283, 57 per cent of which were conducted in the private sector.
