Taheer Isaacs is a true all-rounder, exceeding in hockey and cricket

BEAULIEU – Hockey star is named the Central Gauteng Lions U17 cricket player of the year.

Some people are talented in many ways and so it goes for Taheer Isaacs.

The Beaulieu Hockey Academy star also makes a name for himself on the cricket field and was recently named the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) U17 player of the year.

The North Riding resident plays cricket for Wits University and the CGL U19 academy side. He has earned himself a cricket scholarship with Wits for next year.
“I am a wicket keeper batsman and I open the batting,” the now 18-year-old said.

“I am more of a calm player. I look to access bowlers first, and if I need, to I will take them on. I normally look to score every time, as I also don’t want to let the bowlers settle. Most importantly, I look for my scoring areas and use my strengths.”

His short-term goals include being selected for the CGL Lions team, and he is already in the squad.
“One goal I would also like to do is to play in the SA U19 side and to go to the upcoming camp. I want to perform well there and make the squad to play against West Indies and India.”

Isaacs’ ultimate goal is to play for the Proteas in the near future.
“However, starting small will be performing at the academy side and getting semi-pro or a Lions contract. [I can] take it day by day and be patient, performing and [eventually] achieving my goal to play for the Proteas.”

The highlight of his career so far was earning the scholarship at Wits, which Isaacs called a dream come true.
He was also named as the U15 player of the year in 2017 and his award for U17 player of the year this year is also a memorable moment.

“I think a boost in my confidence was also making the Lions Cubs Week in January and the Lions franchise being victorious and winning the trophy.”
