Fourways Can encourages generosity ahead of World Hunger Day
FOURWAYS – Fourways Community Action Network has donated food parcels to 1 300 people and R10 000 in food vouchers, amongst other things.
Fourways Can (Community Action Network) brings attention to the plight of the hungry ahead of the 10th annual World Hunger Day on 28 May.
“We’re bringing awareness to the more than 820 million people living in chronic hunger during an unprecedented world crisis. On World Hunger Day – and every day – we ask the world to come together with a shared goal of realising healthy, fulfilling lives of self-reliance and dignity for all people,” said Fourways Can leader Janna Couto.
She believes that the solutions to our greatest challenges lie within each of us and our communities.
“As we face this together, it is critical that the very people in crisis are empowered to address it powerfully in their communities – no matter where they live.”
Fourways Can has helped feed people within the communities of Diepsloot and Kya Sands since the start of lockdown.
They distribute food vouchers through a system called Add a Bit, which is tailored to meet community needs. People receive vouchers allowing them to shop at Shoprite, Checkers and Pick n Pay.
“We are able to distribute hundreds of vouchers at a time. This system offers people dignity and discretion and allows them to buy what they need. For individuals such as the elderly and child-headed households who are unable to shop for themselves, we prepare food parcels and distribute these door-to-door,” said Couto.
She said that the group has so far donated the following:
- Food parcels for 1 300 people
- R10 000 in food vouchers
- R6 500 worth of dog and cat food to the SPCA
- Over 100 educational packs
- Baby packs for 30 moms
- Assisted the Phronesis Educational Trust
- A free resource page has been created on their website enabling children to listen to stories read by the public.
Fourways Can has also assisted a family to start a small spaza shop.
“Our aim is to assist more people in this manner in an effort to create something more sustainable,” said Couto.
