Covid-19: 53 employees at AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine test positive for Covid-19

Management at the mine indicated that all underground production will remain closed until further notice.

The Gauteng Department of Health confirmed that 53 employees at AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng Mine in the Merafong sub-district tested positive for Covid-19.

According to a statement by the Gauteng Department of Health, all employees have been admitted at the Fountain Isolation Facility. An outbreak team was also dispatched to trace all known contacts and the process is ongoing.

The mine indicated that all underground miners (378) were tested. So far, 274 of those results have been released, with 104 still being processed.

The mine management said that underground production will remain closed until further notice.

Gauteng MEC for Health Bandile Masuku and the Gauteng Health team are scheduled to meet with mine management on 24 May to receive a report and consolidate the response and management of cases. In addition, a meeting between the West Rand District Health Team and the mine team is scheduled to take place on 25 May for further engagement and collective intervention.

The Gauteng Provincial Command Council said on 21 May that employers are required to provide a workplace risk assessment plan that should include the provision of screening and testing facilities, sanitary and social distancing measures to protect vulnerable employees, amongst other things.
