Covid-19: Parks remain closed for all activities, including exercise

FOURWAYS – Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo says that parks remain closed under lockdown Level 4.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JPCZ) discourages residents from using parks for exercise during lockdown Level 4.

City Parks acting chief operations officer Marks Sethaelo said that a decision was taken by the National Command Council in line with the State of Disaster Management Act to close parks in March.

Despite these regulations, a number of residents still use the parks for exercise during the window period between 6am and 9am.

Sethaelo said that law enforcement agencies regularly patrol public spaces, including parks, to ensure compliance with Covid-19 regulations.

City Parks has said that exercise is permitted within a 5km radius of an individual’s place of residence, excluding parks, within the allotted time frame.

Sethaelo said that this restriction was implemented to encourage social distancing and reduce the spread of Covid-19.
