Tips to help you work from home

FOURWAYS – Check out these tips to help you stay productive when working from home during lockdown.

Despite the fact that South Africa has shifted to lockdown Level 4, many employees continue to work from home.

While this has the advantage of avoiding the morning commute and getting some more sleep, it also has added distractions.

Clockwork Media provided the following tips to maintain your productivity while working from home:

  1. Set up a good workspace

Working in bed or on the couch is not ideal. Rather, find a dedicated workspace in a quiet area of your home, away from family members, where you can concentrate.

If you don’t have a separate room, find a space with minimum traffic flow or a corner of a room, separate from the main area.

  1. Set the right tone for the workday

Instead of checking your phone the minute you wake up, try breathing exercises, journaling or meditation. Resist the urge to climb back into bed again with your phone.

Open your curtains and let the sunshine in for a few moments before starting your daily routine.

  1. Give yourself goals and get into a routine

Write a list of what you aim to achieve that day. Make sure your goals are attainable and simple.

Try not to lose your work-life routine completely. For example, if you used to get up early to commute to the office, use that extra time to exercise or get your workspace ready.

  1. Take breaks and make time to connect with colleagues

Getting away from your desk for short periods throughout the day, preferably outside in the sunshine, can re-energise you in order to avoid a midday slump.

Use breaks to reconnect with colleagues.

  1. Clean up and stick to office hours

Set boundaries when it comes to your working hours. When you are done working, tidy up the day’s clutter and prepare for the next day.
