Covid-19: Twitter aghast at clothing list released by Department of Trade and Industry

A number of people have turned to Twitter to express their confusion at the Department of Trade and Industry’s recently published list of items which can and can’t be sold under Level 4.

Crop bottoms have become a talking point on Twitter, as members of the public discuss what exactly these clothing items are, since they are to be worn specifically with boots and leggings.
Patel says clothing stores can sell crop bottoms if they are to be worn with leggings and boots.
So a retailer must determine how a customer will in future wear their product.

DA Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry Dean Macpherson described the gazetted clothing list as ‘bizarre’ and ‘extraordinary’, saying that it “seems to have been plucked from Alice in Wonderland”.

“These new clothing regulations are frankly mad and seem more at place during the 1980s under the Soviet Union than they do in a democracy like South Africa,” said Macpherson.
“To put it bluntly, Minister Patel has become the laughing stock of South Africa with these regulations,” he added.
Macpherson said that people should be able to buy whatever they want as long as it is done in a safe way with health protocols. He also called for Minister Ebrahim Patel to be fired.
“There is no rationale for a clothing list,” said Macpherson.
