WATCH: Local learner shares picture of a rainbow, encouraging togetherness

WATERFALL – Grade 6 learner Lucy Phipps encourages community members to work together in the fight against Covid-19.

Grade 6 Reddam House Waterfall learner Lucy Phipps shared a video inspiring hope and togetherness despite Covid-19.

Headmaster Quinton Pascoe shared Lucy’s heartfelt video and artwork, depicting a rainbow, during the school’s virtual assembly recently.

Pascoe said, “We celebrate our students who have shown resilience and compassion for one another and their surrounding communities in these unfamiliar times.”

He commended Lucy for her efforts, “The message from Lucy is heartfelt and gently reminds us that there is always hope by standing together.”

Lucy said she uses art as a way of expressing herself, relaxing and keeping busy during lockdown.

She took first place in the King’s Castle Rainbow competition with this artwork, winning a Hamley’s gift voucher for herself.

“The task was to create a rainbow with the slogan, ‘Everything will be okay’,” said Lucy.

In her video, Lucy explains how similar people are to dots, which she illustrates in her picture.

“I realised that we are in this together and if we work together, everything will be okay. If we don’t work together, people will get sick and everything will be a mess,” said Lucy.

In the video she states, “Stay strong and fight the war that we created. And if we work together, everything will be okay.”

She not only received praise from Pascoe but also teachers and classmates for her message of hope.

Pascoe added, “In the midst of these exceptional circumstances we find ourselves in, we are acutely aware that our students and parents have had to navigate their way around adjusting to social distancing, heightened awareness of hygiene practices, the pressure of unusual circumstances, sudden changes in our daily routines and to some degree a feeling of despondency.”

Pascoe said that while the new normal may be overwhelming for many, staff at the school have availed themselves to support learners and encourage them to stand together.
