Sunninghill Striders offer exercise tips to help you keep fit at home

SUNNINGHILL – Running club posts another video to help one stretch at home.

Sunninghill Striders have published more exercise videos to help people stay fit and increase their muscle strength while at home during the lockdown.

Running club member Olivia Schiller is a physiotherapist and posts regular videos of exercises for club members to copy. She also donated resistance bands to members to help them stretch.

In one video she walks one through how to do a basic bridge exercise with her husband, Max.

He starts lying on his back with his knees pointed up and feet flat on the ground.

“I want hips, knees and ankles aligned, so legs are hip-width apart,” Olivia explained during the video.

“You are going to start with a nice deep breath in. Remember we are breathing from the tummy. Then tuck your tail bone, so tilt your pelvis, squeeze your buttocks and lift up into a bridge. And then rolling down from your upper back, middle back, lower back and then uncurl your tail.”

Max then places his hands on his hips before breathing in again and lifting his pelvis into a bridge for the second time.

“With this exercise, really concentrate on squeezing your bum to lift and making sure from hip to hip [you are] staying perfectly level, as if you are balancing a tray across your hip bones.”

Sunninghill Striders has also partnered with Embark Jozi North which offers group training with a specific focus on triathlons. This includes a 21-day online training platform that focuses on strength for swimming, cycling and running.

Striders chairperson, Lisa Teepe said, “We are so fortunate to live in a time where there are so many online resources available to us. Our members have enthusiastically shared the various fitness apps they have found useful.”

Another one is AdventureTales which is run by club member Mike Sewell on Instagram. It posts a list of movies, Ted talks, podcasts and books to encourage people and help them follow their dreams.

“Sunninghill Striders strives to be a club which welcomes runners of all levels. While there may not be any races for a while, now is the perfect time to work on your base fitness and become part of a wonderful running community,” Teepe concluded.
