Football activities are suspended

DAINFERN – While all football has been suspended for teams under the Rand Central Local Football Association, there is some respite for players while at home.

The Rand Central Local Football Association decided to suspend all football activities due to the growing cases of the coronavirus in the country.

The Dainfern Lions Club, which has now merged with the Crusaders Football Club, was originally scheduled to start their season following the Easter holidays in early April.

Chairman of the club Nic Papas said that it was unanimously decided to suspend the activities and to work concurrently with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s implementations announced on 15 March.

“The league will be suspended and we will look at the matter after Easter. The most important thing is to contain the virus and prevent the spread,” said Papas.

He added that while the kids were not too happy about the suspension of football, it is a necessary precaution to delay the league and all activities as the ‘health and safety of the players and staff comes first’.

In the meantime, the club is creating home-based football training for the players who are part of the club which include lessons for players to use every day to keep them active. “We’re planning to teach them more about the theory behind football so that they don’t become couch potatoes.

“Being respectful and obedient is something we also teach here at the club, and is not something that only needs to be done on the field.”

Admin staff are continuing work as usual, but are working from home. Papas also said coaches will still be paid even though they are not coaching at the moment.

“We mustn’t panic, we need to be responsible and teach kids to keep clean and wash their hands.”
