HeronBridge quartet is victorious in first round of Bragging Writes quiz

FOURWAYS – High school learners were tested on their general knowledge by the quiz-master at the Bragging Writes Book Quiz.

The second edition of the Bragging Writes Book Quiz kicked off at Skoobs Theatre of Books, Montecasino on 21 February.

The quiz is for high school learners between grades 8 and 11. The five schools who took part were Fourways High School, HeronBridge College, Reddam House Helderfontein, Brescia House and newcomers Reddford House Northcliff.

Parents and siblings were seated on the sides of the teams’ tables while the learners sat by their tables, decorated with the school’s name and mascot. Rounds consisted of 10 questions each, with each round consisting of different themes. These included classic and contemporary books to television (movies and/or series), well-known quotes, the wizarding world and identifying graphics and illustrations.

After the first three rounds, store manager Kirsten Rolsten, who played the role of quizmaster, gave the scores of the teams so far. The HeronBridge girls were in the lead, and seemed sure of their chances in the quiz.

During the last three rounds, parents of the learners also got involved, often smiling when a question they knew the answer to came up. One parent jokingly remarked that a quiz like this should take place for the parents.

The final scores came after a 10-minute break with the marking of the sheets, the teams answered on. Reddam scored 26 points, Fourways High scored 34 points, Brescia and first-timers Reddford tied for second place with 35 points. HeronBridge won with 49 points.

Rolsten applauded all those who participated. She said that the quiz is ‘really to promote reading’. “You generally want to get kids reading more, high school kids especially, since they spend a lot of their time on their phones, laptops and tablets,” she said.

The goal is to get more schools involved and to have the book quiz take place every year. “It sometimes gets frustrating when you don’t see kids reading since there are so many books for kids their age.”

With HeronBridge winning this first round, they advance to the quarter-finals in September.

The other four schools will come back next month for another round together with Steyn City School as another competitor.

The next round of the book quiz will take place in March.
