A rocking night at the ballet

PAULSHOF – Rock music and the beauty of ballet combined recently when the Queen Show ran from 8–19 January at the Pieter Toerien Theatre in Montecasino.

In a unique stage production, The Queen Show, talented ballet dancers performed to the rocking music of Queen at the Pieter Toerien Theatre in Montecasino from 8 to 19 January.

Choreographed by husband and wife team Angela and Michael Revie, the Mzansi Ballet production saw 11 dancers show off their moves to 16 songs from Queen’s catalogue.

Directed by Dirk Badenhorst, the piece was inspired by another Queen-themed production that the Revies performed in about a decade ago and allowed them to work on their own concepts.

Safyah Hosanee and Gerhard Kotzè smile for the camera. “We came tonight because I received an email telling me the show’s run was nearly finished,” Hosanee said. “The ballet to Queen music has been a very different experience.” Photo: Robyn Kirk

“These are some of the best dancers I’ve ever worked with,” Michael told Fourways Review on 18 January after the penultimate show at the theatre. “It’s done very well, and we’re so lucky. The last few shows were actually sold out. A big thank you to Simon King, who did the show’s lighting and Harry Faulkner who is the venue manager who does everything here.”

It was a family outing for daughter Zoë Dreyer and parents Izel and Ben.
