Care for your pet’s health

FOURWAYS – It is important to take your pet to the nearest veterinary near you, should you notice any unusual change on your furry friend.

With the recent heatwave in Gauteng the past week, Fourways Vet Hospital has noticed that pets are struggling in the heat.

They urge all pet owners to familiarise themselves with symptoms of heatstroke and identify the nearest veterinary facility. Heatstroke can cause organ failure and must be treated.

Symptoms:

  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Excessive panting
  • Sticky/ dry tongue and gums
  • Dark/bright red tongue and gums
  • Staggering/unsteady
  • Sizing
  • Bloody diarrhoea or vomiting
  • High temperature

Treatment:

  • Move somewhere cool
  • Offer small amounts of cool water to drink
  • Wet with cool water
  • Place in front of a fan
  • Get to a vet as quickly as possible as heatstroke can cause organ damage.
