System remains constrained, no load–shedding for today– Eskom

JOBURG – The power utility has put in place an emergency response command centre to monitor the system to avoid load–shedding.

Earlier in the week, Eskom notified the country that the electricity system is under severe constraints and vulnerable, but they are expecting no load–shedding, this remains the same for today (7 November).

The statement read, “The electricity system remains under severe pressure with more than 10 500 MV unavailable due to planned and unplanned breakdowns at coal–filled power generation stations. Recovery efforts are underway to expedite the return of units from planned and unplanned maintenance and to replenish emergency services.”

The power utility has put in place an emergency response command centre to monitor the system and to implement contingency plans to avoid and minimise load-shedding this week.

“We remind customers that any unexpected shift, such as additional unplanned breakdowns or the unavailability of diesel for our open cycle gas turbines or water levels at our planned storage schemes, could result in load–shedding at short notice.”

Tips to save on electricity, especially in these hot temperatures:

  • Set the air conditioner at an average 23°C
  • Switch off the geysers over peak periods
  • Use cold tap water than relying on the geyser every time
  • Set your swimming pool pump cycle twice day timer
  • At the end of the day switch off computers, printers and fax machines, avoid standby or sleep mode

Eskom has advised customers to check load–shedding schedules on the Eskom website
